Every year Apple’s watchOS compatibility list gets a little shorter, and watchOS 27 cuts deeper than most. Five Apple Watch models lose support at once — including the Series 8, which is only four years old, and the original Apple Watch Ultra, which cost $799 in 2022.
Here is the complete list, why Apple drew the line where it did, and what actually happens to your watch if it did not make the cut.

The dividing line is the S9 chip, introduced with the Series 9 and Ultra 2 in 2023. Everything with an S9 or newer is in; everything older is out. The SE 3 makes the list because it uses newer silicon than the SE 2 it replaced.

The Original Ultra Getting Cut Is the Real Story
Series 6 and Series 7 losing support is ordinary — those are five and six year old watches.
The original Apple Watch Ultra is different. It launched in September 2022 at $799, marketed at divers, ultrarunners, and expedition users as a premium, durable, buy-it-for-years device. Four annual OS releases is a short life for a watch sold on that promise, and considerably shorter than what a comparable Garmin owner would expect.
The Series 8 is in a similar position. It was Apple’s mainstream flagship in 2022 and is a perfectly capable watch today. It simply predates the S9.
Why Apple Drew the Line at S9
Apple’s stated reason is processing power. Cait Dooley, Apple Watch Product Marketing Manager, put it directly: the new watchOS features, “including the capabilities of Siri AI and the new tap gesture, work best with the processing power that is in Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, and SE 3.”
There is real substance to this. The headline watchOS 27 feature is an on-device version of Siri that can handle more complex requests without sending them to a remote server. On-device language processing is genuinely demanding, and the S9’s Neural Engine was a large step up from the S8. The double-tap gesture that debuted alongside the S9 depended on the same silicon.
That does not make it painless for Series 8 and Ultra owners, but it is a more defensible cut than a purely arbitrary one.
What You Actually Lose
If your watch is on the dropped list, here is what you miss in watchOS 27:
- On-device Siri AI — faster, more capable, more private request handling
- The new tap gesture — a new one-handed control
- Dynamic app grid — the app layout reorganises based on how often you open each app, with frequently used apps moving toward the centre
- Workout Buddy without an iPhone — the coaching feature runs standalone on the watch
- HealthKit heart rate and cycling power zones for third-party apps — matters if you use Strava, TrainingPeaks, or similar training platforms
- Future watchOS 27.x features throughout the year
What You Do Not Lose
This is the part worth being clear about, because the annual compatibility story generates more panic than it deserves.
Your watch keeps working exactly as it does today. It stays on watchOS 26, which is a mature, feature-complete release. It still pairs with current iPhones. Apple continues to issue security updates for older watchOS versions. Third-party apps keep working, usually for years.
Specifically, if you have a Series 9 or later you already have hypertension notifications and the other watchOS 26 health features. If you have a Series 8 or original Ultra, you keep everything you have now — ECG, blood oxygen where available in your region, fall detection, crash detection, workout tracking, and the full app ecosystem.
An Apple Watch that stops getting OS updates is not a dead watch. It is a watch that stopped getting new features.
The iPhone Requirement People Forget
watchOS 27 requires iOS 27, which means an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later.
This catches people out every year: a supported watch paired to an unsupported iPhone cannot update. If you are on an iPhone XS or older, your Series 9 will sit on watchOS 26 regardless of the watch’s own eligibility. Check the iPhone before you plan around the watch.
Should You Upgrade?
If you have a Series 6, Series 7, or SE 2: these are four to six year old watches with degraded batteries at this point. An upgrade is reasonable on hardware grounds alone, independent of watchOS 27. The Apple Watch SE 3 is the value pick.
If you have a Series 8: no urgency. It is a good watch, and watchOS 26 will serve you well for another year or two. Upgrade when the battery starts limiting you, not because of a compatibility list. When you do, Series 11 is the natural landing spot, or wait a few weeks for the Series 12.
If you have the original Ultra: this one stings more, because Ultra owners paid a premium. Practically, though, the same logic applies — the watch does everything today that it did yesterday. If you are going to upgrade, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 is expected at Apple’s confirmed 9 September 2026 event, so wait for it and for the Ultra 3’s post-launch price drop.
Timing note: if you are upgrading, September is the month. New hardware lands, and the outgoing models get discounted. Buying an Apple Watch in August is the single worst time of year.
The Wider Point
Apple supports its watches for roughly four to five annual OS releases. Garmin, by contrast, tends to keep older watches on feature updates far longer, which is one of several reasons serious endurance athletes stay in that ecosystem — see our Apple Watch vs Garmin breakdown.
Neither approach is wrong. Apple ships more capable silicon each year and builds features that require it; Garmin optimises for longevity on modest hardware. Knowing which trade you prefer is worth more than any single year’s compatibility list.
